Flickr Maps

Flickrmap.com is a web service by Mark Zeman that allows you to put a flash based world map on your own website or blog. It will then automatically search your photos at Flickr for location information and plot the photos on your own map, on your own website.
It's as simple as tagging your photos with a city and country name! Flickrmap also supports photos that have been geotagged or photos that have location data encoded in their EXIF properties.
First time use of Flash and vector based map display. Good basic work, but a bit hard to interact with.
Different Views
Here are two views of our world I came across today. The first one is a map of world populations: the larger the country, the bigger its population. Each grid square represents a million people. To save you the bother of counting up the squares, the total is printed under the name of every country with more than 10 million people.

With this map it’s easy to get a sense of relative size. The most populous countries leap off the page - China, India - while the smallest countries - countries with fewer than a million people - don’t show up at all. Instead these are listed on the chart between South America and Africa.

The second one was designed by by Hayato Kamono and was made out of Tetris tiles. Check: Put Together to Make A Peace.

The Revolution Will Be Geotagged
Matt's been developing Python code for his Nokia Series 60 phone so that it can save information as Google Earth KML files. He wants to collect GPS data via a Bluetooth GPS device (or potentially from a GPS enabled phone itself), then he'll convert it to KML; and then he'll email it anywhere he wants as an attachment using SMTP, so that email recipients can see where you are on Google Earth. (via OgleEarth)

Hybrid Mode

Google added another cool feature to their mapping service that will show a street overlay on top of the current satellite image. So you now can easily toggle between abstract and photo layers on maps.google.earth. Unfortunately till now it only works for the US. So, the rest of our world is waiting for...

Yahoo Liberated Maps
Until today, the Yahoo APIs were available only for non-commercial use unless you applied for an exception. The concept of commercial and non-commercial has gone away and exceptions are no longer necessary in most cases.
You can now build Mashups and use our Maps for personal or business use as long as the applications are free of charge and under the rate limit, link to Yahoo! Maps or Driving Directions to your heart’s content or include advertising on the same page or site where you display Yahoo! Maps.

Google Code: Google Earth KML Tutorial
Keyhole has released a detailed tutorial of the KML format that is used in Google Earth. The KML Document details everything you need to know to create and share information with the Google Earth client. If, however, you would like to jump right in and see some real examples of what you can do with KML, then that tutorial is for you.

Be sure to download and browse the KML tutolrial file by just clicking on it. It holds amazing examples of how to bound extra information (images, 3d, html) directly into your Google Earth interface.

Web Mapping goes Open Source
As recently announced, AutoDesk is going to contribute their web mapping software to open source community, soon.
MapServer enables developers to rapidly develop and deploy valuable spatial applications. It works with the latest PHP, .NET, and Java tools to quickly build powerful applications for Windows or Linux server environments. Developers can also publish spatial views internally, over the web, or using Autodesk’s DWF viewing technology for offline portability.
